Moxibustion Therapy (Moxa)

A Traditional Chinese Method to Warm, Heal, and Restore Balance

Moxibustion, often called Moxa Therapy, is one of the oldest and most important techniques in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

It involves the burning of a special herb, Artemisia vulgaris (known as mugwort), near or on specific acupuncture points to stimulate circulation, strengthen the body’s energy (Qi), and dispel cold or dampness from the system.

For thousands of years, moxibustion has been used to promote healing and maintain wellness. The gentle warmth generated by burning moxa penetrates deeply into the body, reaching the meridians and stimulating the flow of Qi and blood. This helps regulate internal functions, support the immune system, and relieve various types of pain and discomfort.

How Moxibustion Works

Moxa can be applied in different ways depending on the patient’s needs and condition:

  • Direct Moxa: A small cone of moxa is placed directly on the skin or on an acupuncture point (often on a slice of ginger or salt to protect the skin) and lit to produce a gentle heat that penetrates deeply.
  • Indirect Moxa: The most common modern technique. A moxa stick is held above the skin, warming the acupuncture point without direct contact.
  • Needle Moxa: A combination of acupuncture and moxibustion, where a small amount of moxa is placed on the handle of an inserted needle to enhance the effect of the treatment.

The warmth of moxa helps to open the meridians, move stagnant energy, nourish deficiency, and expel cold or damp pathogens that contribute to pain or illness.

Therapeutic Benefits of Moxa Therapy

Moxibustion is commonly used for:

  • Chronic fatigue, low immunity, and weakness
  • Digestive disorders such as bloating or diarrhea
  • Menstrual pain and irregular cycles
  • Joint and muscle pain caused by cold or dampness
  • Cold hands and feet, or a general feeling of chilliness
  • Strengthening the body before and after illness
  • Supporting fertility and women’s health
  • Helping turn breech babies (a traditional obstetric use)

Patients often describe the treatment as deeply soothing and comforting. The pleasant heat helps them relax while the body’s natural healing processes are gently activated.
