Moxibustion is a treatment method we offer in our Chicago alternative medicine practice. It employs the heat from a burning dried herb by holding it over a specific point. The most commonly used herb is the mugwort. The purpose is to improve the flow of Qi (energy) and blood in the body. It exists as a treatment method even before the birth of acupuncture. It is one of the methods used in treating chronic diseases and is especially beneficial for patients with cold or stagnant conditions. Also, it is proven to help pregnant women whose baby is not in the normal position for birth.
Moxibustion can be direct or indirect. In the direct method the burning moxa is placed on the acupuncture point and removed before it damages the skin. It will create a pleasant warming sensation. In today's practice only the indirect method is used as the moxa stick is lit up and held over the acupuncture point without contact. In a variation of the indirect method, the acupuncture point is needled and on the outer end of the needle a moxa cone is placed and lit up, which generates heat transported to the body by the needle. Once the aimed effect is achieved the needle is removed. In some treatments the moxa is placed on top of ginger slice or salt. Also, the moxibustion can be facilitated by a moxa-burner, which holds the burning moxa and allows a direct contact with the skin, without leaving marks.
Although the burning of the moxa has a very specific smell and is not recommended for people with respiratory problems, moxibustion is very beneficial in removing blockages and resuming a healthy balance.
